R&D: calibrated chess sparring engines
An AlphaZero-style chess engine trained by Stockfish distillation and self-play on a single consumer GPU. The goal is a set of sparring partners with fixed, clearly different difficulty levels for players training toward Polish Chess Federation categories.
The first release went live on Lichess in September 2026 as three bot accounts. Each level is measured, not just labelled: head-to-head matches between levels (the strongest bot scores 90% against the middle one), matches against Stockfish, endgame minimum checks over thousands of games and move-similarity measurements against Maia-3. A player-diagnosis tool built on the same stack turns a player's own Lichess games into a report of missed tactics and weak motifs.
The project follows one rule: every published number links to a stored run artifact it can be reproduced from.
How I build with Claude
Claude Code is my primary engineering agent. The chess repository is written for agents as much as for people: its agent guide sets the rules for reporting results (every number needs a stored artifact, and every result states what it does not prove), a session-start hook provisions the toolchain for Claude Code on the web, and permission rules keep multi-megabyte run reports out of the agent's context. Long training, evaluation and deployment runs are delegated to the agent in named sessions, so they stay inspectable.
The same approach runs client infrastructure work. This website's Azure setup — deployment through GitHub Actions with a managed identity and OIDC, health checks, and a strict Content Security Policy — was built and verified with Claude Code.
